Hey I found some very brief info in a google search but I cant find much more than "big mean fish, feed it feeders because its mean". Can anyone let me know what the prefered water conditions of a wild trimac are? pH, gh, Kh and temp are what im really after. If anyone could help me out on weather or not they have any spcial dietary needs as well that would be super. Thanks!

If you haven’t already, read the species profile at the top of the page.

They really don’t require anything special from most other Amphilophus or large CA cichlids. Trimacs accept a wide range of water conditions, my Ph is around 7 and temp is about 80. Feed them a good pellet like Hakari Bio-Gold+ as the staple and supplement with Krill, earthworms/night crawlers, silversides, market shrimp. When mine was small I used Omega One Marine Pellets along with Bio-gold+ as the staple very good stuff in Omega One. I would stay away from store bought feeders as they could introduce unwanted pathogens i.e. internal parasites, ich ect. Trimacs may or may not accept tank mates and require at least a 90 gal IMO to thrive, although 75 would work as bare min for one. They dig a lot so sand is a suitable substrate along with some rocks placed directly on the bottom of the tank and drift wood. Pool filter sand is good and cheap. Trimacs have no special lighting requirements so use whatever you like that makes them look good I just use one 6700 full spectrum bulb. Plants will not work so don’t bother. Do at least 25% weekly water changes, 50% is better if you can. There is no need for carbon in the filter unless used for a couple of days to get rid of meds. They grow fast if kept in a good environment, and can get to around 8+” in a year if it’s a male, growth will start to slow down after that. That’s about it, if I left anything out someone will fill in the blanks. Good Luck, they are very good looking and interesting fish.

Hey thanks man! I was just wanting to doubble check that they didnt need anything special before I went and got this guy.

Need frequent changes, good mixed diet, very aggressive. I suggest you get yours from a reputable breeder like Rapps. My will be a year in March he is already around a foot and chunky (he was around an inch when i got him)-great fish to have-very sensitive though to temperature changes. He is in a 240 with a Amarillo, Xil-look and act like a Barred Midas and RD and a Female Dovii to name a few.

He rules my tank hands down and at times can be very grumpy toward his tank mates. So be careful of what mates you select for him.

Go get him, and post a Pic!

Ya know I didn't think about that, like Shamrock said make sure it's really a Trimac and not a low grade FH if you're going to a lfs to buy it. Otherwise order it from someone like Rapps to be sure.

I have an old one here -believe it is titled-My 240 gallon tank-and another titled The Lions Den. But ill try to post new ones.

Just Google Trimac Cichlid Profile for information.

Wonderful fish.
Loves crickets, superworms, worms, pellets, and blood worms.
I wouldn't feed live because of the threat of internal parasites, they don't need them anyway.

Very responsive eat out of your hand and mine will let me rub his side. The females have just as much personality. Work well with dithers like Silver Dollars, but not any other fish.

Excellent choice of fish.

Yea I'm quite sure he is a Trimac...the place I'm getting it from is pretty reputable and the only place I buy livestock from. They deal with Rapps, Hans Discus and some other top notch suppliers. I have never seen a mislabled fish in the store and they always lable with scientific names, and the guys there know what they are doing so I trust them. I'll take pics ASAP.
