Need suggestions for a heavy sand in a natural brown color. Definitely don't want the tan/ yellowish color of play sand. Can't do small pebbles because of my birchir. Need about 100 pounds

I always prefer pool filter sand, it is inert (so it doesn´t change pH), and if you buy the bagged stuff, froma pool supply shop, usually cleaner.
It is also graded to be heavy enough, that falls back when vacuumed.

I used one 50lb bag in the 6 ft tank above.

id look into garnet in a 30-60 mesh size… the cheaper it is the more brown it should be instead of maroon.

Carib sea peace river is also a heavier grain that looks good in a variety of browns. Probably the heaviest grain u can get away with but IMO a bichir should still b able to pass it if ingested.

Hello; Back years ago before I knew of pool filter sand I came up with a way to get sand of a size which suited. I started with a load of construction sand.
I first made a sieve with screen wire & 2x4's and dry sifted the sand to get rid of the very fine particles and dust after learning the hard that grading it wet is harder.
The trick is to figure what size particles you want. The construction sand can range in size a lot. If a standard size screen wire does not suit you may be able to overlap two in order to have the right openings.

Once you get enough of the size wanted then do the rinsing in buckets with water.

A lot of work to be sure so i hope the pool filter sand suits.

I saw a post here somewhere recently of Red Flint sand. Also used a pool filter sand, but on the darker end of the color spectrum. Not sure if you can get it where you live, but another option 🤙🏼

Thats exactly what I'm looking for. Now I gotta find it.
Just make sure you call around as like anything used in aquariums it comes with a premium price tag if you’re lazy. Red Flint Sand is used in all kinds of applications from pool filters, construction, sand blasting, and of course aquariums. If you buy a 50lb bag at a LFS it’s $55.00, online it’s $87.00, but if you buy it from a local sand and gravel or pool supply company the same 50lb bag is $7.00. Also look at the link as it comes in various sized grains too.
