Hi I have a 9 inch male red devil in a 125g tank and wanted to add something else with him before he grows older are claims the tank completely. Only had him for a few weeks In there.

I'm open to anything. Let me know what works. Big cichlids or smaller fast schoolers? Maybe a female Rd?

Tank is fully cycled and has no other fish in it

At that size, pretty sure he already claimed the tank since he's been in there for a few weeks. An adult Amphilophus type will easily defend a 6 foot tank with no room to spare no matter when you add tank mates.

The thing about schoolers is that they are only fast when they are awake. Once the lights are off, they are easily picked off once they are asleep. Even slow oscars are able to reduce a school of 12 adult giant danios over a period of months.

Would taking him out for a few minutes and rearranging the tank help any? To make it seem like a new tank?

Might be a little risky but I've been able to keep mine with a pair of Bichirs and a rainbowshark without any issues.

That said, I just had to rehome another larger cichlid due to aggression. The devil did not initiate but he did not let itself get pushed either. So I guess it really boils down to individual personalities.

I'm personally thinking about trying some convicts to see how it goes.

So I guess it really boils down to individual personalities.

Those fish, at least for the time being, aren't being viewed as rivals for a mate, or food. If, more likely when, that changes, your midevil will stop playing nice, just like he did with the other cichlid in your tank. In this hobby success isn't rated in weeks or even months, but in years.

I personally would take the advice that was given.

Again, +1.

My 7in male Sagittae, a cousin of Devils, has killed off 4 Spanner barbs, two mates, and a rival. And relentlesly chased picked on other fish I tried to home with him from catfish, to plecos, to PTC, and other cichlids in the same tank size as you. Best bet is leave him be and you be his tank mate.
