Need quick advice- red devil in 125 what tank mates?

Yep, Duane pretty much nailed it. Big +1.

I believe there are experienced aquarists (like Andy) that have over those years become intuitive about what works, and what may not. They can put together fish in tanks that other aquarists cannot, especially those noobs with only a couple years in.
He did mention that the Amp in the tank killed his prize one, and would only tolerate that single dovii, and notice that there are only two fish in a tank, (although not gallon large) but with a large footprint, and that they have been together for years. Fish are capable of selective relationships just like other animals, this is why cichlids go thru mating rituals, yet just because you put a female and male together, doesn't necessarily mean they will breed or stay together after a spawn. Bondingwith cichlids can be complicated.
OP if you are willing to spend the money, and sacrifice a number of fish getting there, go right ahead, and truthfully document the progress over time, I'd be (and am sure others would be) interested in how many trials it takes to get to a compatible tank mate. May be lucky with 1, or may take 10 deaths or more.

My preference for keeping cichlids has always been in breeding groups (trios, pairs, harems etc).
But occasionally after a rampage, I'd end up with a single individual, so i had a 150 gal catch all tank where I'd toss that individual with a random bunch of others, to wait until a friend looking for a certain individual for pairing asked for it, or wanted to get rid of a single individual that i had the opposite sex of.
I never like a hodgepodge tank of random species, from different location, but sometime you get what you get.
That "catch all tank" had all sorts of Africans, Centrals, Madagascans all crammed together at any one time, in no particular order, or rhyme or reason .
At one point it had these two, and they lasted a long time, because no body had the kind of space they'd need

and because the tank was so wacky, it mostly worked, of course it needed large daily water changes, and sometimes hell did break loose.

Thank you all for the advice.

I think what I'm going to try is getting 3 females to see if he takes to 1band I can form a pair. Then rehome the other 2.

I figure this would also help spreading any possible aggression.

Keep a divider handy, even if/when two fish do pair off, in the close quarters of a glass box violent fits of rage can still happen at any time. This happened to me just yesterday, with me wife. :)

Just goes to prove that males are not always the aggressors. Gotta watch out for some of the female species as well. lol
