NEED: Safe and cheap heaters for a large acrylic tank!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well they are only $75 or so but require a controller, i love my controller with 2 1000 watt heaters, took care of my heating problem. i tried the multiple 300 watt heater option, i had 5 ebo jager 300 watt heaters and didn't heat worth a crap in my opinion and the thermostats were always coming on and off, had to always adjust etc. i love my jehmco/controller setup.

Yeah I don't think it's going to be cheap to keep the tank heated enough through out the winter without proper planning. How much did you spend on your setup? It really sounds amazing...

thanks! it wasn't too bad, the heating was a bit though about $250 total initial cost for equipment but the main cost of heating is running 2000 watts continuous 24/7 during the colder months which will run me about $100 a month probably , luckily that will only be for 3 months or so.

:O At least its for 3 months....

not an expert on this but just a thought, maybe you can insulate the tank during winter to help with heat/cold issues.

I want to chime in, For a year I kept my tank in my basement that had insulation but no heat, it took three 300 watt heaters to keep my 220 gallon acrylic at 78 and some times it dipped down to 76. however now that I heat the basement I only run 2. SO I think people are on to something when they say thats not enough.

As far as the tank goes I had a thread about building a "room" around the tank basicllay my plan was to put up walls on three sides of the tanks and insulate those walls, however the front of my tank in that thread was going to be side the house, only the three sides I was building a wall for would have been in my garage.

Now one more note, I had A 55 gallons tank with a 50 gallon sump, the tank was in the house and the sump was in the garage when the temp dipped below 40 the 200 watt heater had a problem, I am sure it would have fail completely at 0 out side.
