So I've acquired 2 baby fancy orandas, and I have a 29 gallon and XP2 set up and ready for them. I've been reading a lot of information regarding fancy goldfish and I'm very confused about it all.

It seems like everyone and their mother says 20 gallons for the first fish, 10-15 for every other after that. Books, forums, and profiles say a 29 gallon is fine for two specimens. However, I've read here and there that people recommend 30 gallons per goldfish.

While I certainly agree that the more space/water the better for fish, would having two of these guys housed in a 29 with proper filtration and 50% weekly water changes not be good enough?

use the 1 inch per Gallon rule especially since their not aggressive

Orandas garner a length of 8-10 inches. That's practically the average. If these were shortbodied, they'll fit much better than the standard ones.

You already have the fish. House in 29 with plans to upgrade if necessary to a larger tank or a small pond.

You will have to watch the water quality closely in a 29 gallon as they grow.

They're short bodied... I think, both of them are pretty dumpy. Here's a couple grainy pictures from their short-term stay in a 10 gallon while I get their 29 established. Just need a few more days for the cycle.

The gold one doesn't look like much of an oranda but he's got a wen. They are both 2 inches long from nose to tailtip.

The second one looks stunted to me. Where did you obtain them? First one is indeed SB oranda. 29g is fine for two to three SB orandas.

The second one was an adoption. He's actually completely missing his right eye. The first was bought as a companion for the orange (I know, I know. I felt horrible because he isn't really getting the personal "play with the fish" attention he needs, they swim everywhere together now and are happy as clams).

I've only had them both a couple weeks, I did think it was odd that the orange seemed a big longer than the red and white.

Lupin, if I may ask, is the orange oranda indeed a short bodied? I have never seen a small stunted fish before so I can't really judge what type of goldfish it is. Will the little guy be alright is he's already been stunted so young?
