right, so iv been having a few probs with my landlord. he has a habit of just walking in my house whenever he feels like it.
now all people that know him think hes a madman....he is. he is also my next door neighbour, which makes it all the more crepy that he comes whenever he feels, even though legally he has to give me 24hrs notice.

anyway, so the other day i come home, and hes sitting in his van (9pm and -7 outside and hes sitting in his van:screwy:) and says
"i had the gas man round today and hes petrified of snakes! your python was goin ballistic, trying to get out its cage and attack us"

he is referring to my male burm of unknown size now lol. but once again i didnt know the gasman was even coming round.
right, so i have noticed a chage in his behaviour the last few months. hes not quite as soppy as he used to be. a bit sketchy i think is the best way to put it.
but he has NEVER EVER EVER gone 'ballistic' and struck at ANYTHING (apart from my leg at feeding time lol) since iv had him.

now bear in mind, theres always me walking around his viv, my autistic 4 year old, so theres a lot of screaming ad banging from her. hes been on stage and photoshoots! NONE of that has set him off, so why all of a sudden now???

part of me thinks hes making it up but part of me says hes not.
why would he lie about it?
PLUS if this has happened what the HELL has he been doing to make him react like that???
im not happy, hes potentially risking lives if hes antagonising him to make him that mad, and its slowly making him more aggressive.

cheers for any replies, just kinda at a lose end and am planning to confront him on it. im not happy about it at all, but from now on he will NOT be going in my house without me there and keeping an eye on my animals.

For one, its illegal for him to enter your apartment without 24 hours notice. you can contact your local city officials or some regulatory body about that and get him in trouble. Also any utilities or repair appointments must be made with your knowledge.

It sounds to me like he's starting to not like you having all those snakes in the apartment, or maybe he's decided he just doesn't like having you as a tenant. The snakes are just an easy excuse, as most uneducated people will believe a large snake poses a realistic danger, even if its in a locked terrarium.

I would contact whatever agency regulates tenant-landlord relations and report what he's doing to them, and get whatever advice you can on what actions you can take from them.

I agree sounds like the snakes are an excuse to me . also u should deal with him entering your home like that man , whos to say stuff wont go missing someday .

Could it be that , once upon a time, you made him feel entitled to enter the apartment whenever he felt like it? If you are uncomfortable with that now, I suggest you take a strong stance and let him know, in no uncertain terms, that you will not condone it.

As to the snakes, two issues to check: (i) do snakes have to be registered in the UK? Do you have all the paperwork that you need to have for your snakes?

(ii) Have you checked the renting agreement clauses? Are you allowed to keep pets in the rented apartment?

If the anser to the above is, in both cases, negative, there is no point in confronting the guy, because you might be in a difficult position.

So go and check how you are in terms of paperwork, please.

I think you should set up a spy cam or do something simple like add some dust around the top of the cage so that you can see if anyone touched it. I don't trust people. When I went to France for several weeks I took a few precautions and counted the pills in my medicine cabinet and rigged small pieces of hay to fall unnoticed if any drawers were opened. All of my traps were tripped and I found that a few oxycodone were missing. Needless to say, that animal sitter will not be returning. You could do the same.

From the perspective of someone who also keeps relatively calm snakes around people who do not like them/aren't familiar with their behaviour, your landlord may have just seen the snake moving its face at the glass, and exaggurated.

Definately make a point of not allowing him access without 24 hours notice.

If I was in your situation and didn't have kids. I just might let the bigger ones out for the day while I was out. Maybe scare him back into the hallway.... I know this isn't an option as you or me wouldn't put any reptile in harms way.

Good luck Chloe,
Chris

well the worst it could have been is it struck at the glass a couple of times. I take it you have a lock on the enclosure anyway? You should definately politely ask him if it would be possible to get some kind of notice of anyone coming in the premises (gas man etc) as well as himself. No point doing it in a negative way... just in a 'it might be useful to let me know' kinda way.

Just the thought of your landlord going into your apartment whenever you are not there is super creepy to me, being you are a woman. I would change the lock and ask him to notify you any time he needs access, this way you will be there if he needs to be in there. If changing the locks is not a option, I like the spycam idea. Something is fishy with him being in there when you are not there. I smell a perv. On top of that, he may be antagonizing the snake, but I doubt that is why he is in the apartment in the first place.

That is a kind of fishy situation bud Chloe, shure hope you can get out of it :) Besides the great advice that has been given so far, I wouldmake shure your snake has zero chance of escaping. To me as well seems like it could be a good time for you to think about moving on and finding a new place to rent or even getting your own place if you can. Sometimes you can turn dificult situations in life into oportunities :)
