Need some advice/input regarding my tank.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
+1 on flourish excel. I have a low tech non c02 planted 40 gal. It got rid of my algae problem. Wasn't immediate but after a couple weeks it was gone.

Nobody carries it locally so I switched to a similar product made by API. Some say its not as good as seachem, but it does the job. Just make sure you dose daily

Just keep an eye on your fish when you dose this kind of thing. Anything sensitive may not appreciate it, and an overdose could wipe your livestock, so read carefully... Stupid me knows from experience. :/

I added the shrimp and fish, did a water change and used a toothbrush on plants and driftwood.

Shrimp and fish was eaten within minutes....haha. So they didn't get to eat algae.
However the snails are doing a good job, slowly, but you can tell where they've been.

I'm dosing 28-30 ml a day now with happy carbo, which is the same as flourish excel.

Will update you in the following weeks, but I'm optimistic.

So I've decided to remove one of the bichirs, I choose the delhezi.

Reason being that this is the one that has the biggest appetite and takes food before the other bichir even gets the chance and IMO the least attractive one.

Also one of my butterfly fish is also gone, and so is one of the two ropefish.

Hopefully they'll get a new home soon, meanwhile they're at one of the tanks at work.

Now the bio load is somewhat less, I'll change purigen on Wednesday on all three canisters., feed them only every second day, do bigger water changes then usual and add a daily dose of happy life carbo which contains some chemical that hurts algae, but not plants.

All of these changes will hopefully make the tank less prone to algae and make the remaining fish feel better at home.

I appreciate all the advices I've received so far, thank you.
And I'll keep you updated.

I too think the water changes are where you're going to see better results. Otherwise how long has been since the bulbs ect have been changed? But floating or submerged plants was also a great suggestion. I would cut back to feeding every other day if possible. Increase the % you change when you do water changes, and add plants like pothos or floaters. Changing the purigen is def a good start.

The bulbs are 5-6 months old. So still good there, ill look into floating plants, not sure it fit into the look im going for,

Will change purigen in 3-4 days, didn't have time this Sunday, only managed to do a quick water change.

Other's good ideas:
Fast growing floating plants like hornwort
Add CO2

You also could take all the substrate out and give it a really good washing.. It looks like this tank has been established for awhile?
IMO, I know this contradicts what the experts say, but I think it's good to pull everything out of a planted tank about once every 1-2 years and give the substrate a good cleaning to remove waste that overfertilizes the water column. Obvious, keep your good bacteria seeded in the filter when you do this, as you will wipe it out in your substrate..

Will take everything out this Sunday, I'm changing the sand to a finer sand I have at work, which looks great, so I'll clean everything real good, I might change the layout and the fishes, but not sure.

The fishes will be placed in a different tank while I'll do it, so it's a possibility that I'll use a week or two to think about what I want to be in the tank, as much as I love these fish, I just don't enjoy it as much as I would with a community or cichlid tank,
I only see the hujeta's at day, and everything else is out at night which sort of ruins the tank for me.

I have also bought a led light with remote that I can dim and change color, which I'll use as a night light, so we'll see.
