Ok well what if i scrap the african idea any other recommendations I have never had discus how are they? how many can i put in there? I will slowly be swapping the fake plants for live ones as well
 
Discus isn't easy.. From my experience you need pristine water quality.

If you want some color, go for a school of bosemani rainbows coupled with a school of red or green turqiouse rainbows with angelicus loaches, plus live plants.
 
i personally would keep africans. they are easy to keep and are very active and a huge array of colors you can pick from. as for substrate, you can use the gravel you have now. i like to use the crushed agronite. it helps keep your water paramiters in check natrually. the fish love it too. they are always digging in it.
 
Ya im thinking im just gonna go for it adjust as needed add rocks with new batches of cichlids i am also gonna be planting over time as well so im been browsing all day and found lots of setups similar with happy cichlids
