it is safe. you are viewing it as it passes through water.

it is safe for your eyes as long as it is in the water.

just don't plug it in out of water and then look. that can cause eye damage.
Thanks again 12 Volt Man.. :)

Is it ok to turn on the UV light for 24 hours every day?

Also I was curious about whether the UV filter will help to kill parasite inside the fish such as internal worms?

no, it won't. the bacteria/parasite must pass under the UV light.

it is possible if eggs from internal worms pass through the chamber that they will be inactivated by the UV, but the contact time may not be long enough.

different bacteria/parasites require different contact times as some are harder to kill than others.

I'd leave the UV on 24 hours after the addition of new fish, new plants, etc for about a month. Then afterwards maybe every other day for 12 hours or so. That will extend bulb life. Also UV bulbs start emitting less and less UV as they get older so I'd replace them every 6 months of 24 hours use or 1-1.5 year of occasional use. Look on eBay for the cheapest bulb prices.

So even with a UV filter, my fish are not safe from parasites? Well, at least it gets rid of those pesky white tiny dust-like worms.. :D

Thanks for the heads up.. Do I need to replace with the same brand or can I just use some random tube with the same wattage?

So even with a UV filter, my fish are not safe from parasites?

not internal ones.

It can help with external protozoans like ich, but sometimes it doesn't.

in a perfect world, the ich parasite should be killed ( actually inactivated) if it passes under the UV light

but because of variances in contact time, this doesn't always happen. most of the LFS in my area, for example, have UV systems for their pods of tanks. they still get ich on occasion. so it doesn't always irradicate ich even though it sometimes can.
