Need some help, MFK. Possible mini-cycle.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When I discovered the problem I just plugged it back in. I was on my way out the door for work and didn't have time to mess with it. Over the next three days as I got home, I did a 50% WC each day. On my next days off, Monday-Tuesday, I intend to drag the FX5 outside and hose it out because, well, its due anyway.

I suspect that the fish might just feel 'gross' due to the crap that doubtlessly accumulated due to the filter being down. Ah well, live and learn. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time.

Bb will live some time in still water, plus I'd say there's was still some air in your can and with Bio media I'm sure bubbles surfaced now and then. I never did a wc after I realized mine was off, plugged it in tested params for a week nothing changed...... but I forgot to plug it in AFTER I cleaned the fx5 so it was spick and span, still unsure how the bb survived cuz all I did was hook up tubes and fill, let sit for a few days and realized I didnt plug it in.

No harm no foul lesson learned. These cans are so ****ing quiet sometimes its impossible to tell especially if your rocking a spray bar!

Glad everything worked out Chix!

Thanks man! Everyone seems fine now and they've all settled into their rolls with each other. I think the main problem was the addition of so many new fish throwing Max and Drogo out of their grooves. They're all doing fine now!

This is why I refuse to use canisters. I've forgot to plug them back in, I've had them quit, they get nasty so fast and restarting them is always frustrating.

I would have definitely stripped it down and cleaned the whole thing before plugging back in. IF you just plugged it back in I would bet that 3 day nasty is what's got Max and Droggo all bent out of shape. Not sure exactly what the "nasty" is but doubt it's going to show up in any test.

When stagnant filter juice incidents happen here I just flush the tank (crank the 1/4" drip line wide open for a day) or do a few good sized water changes if it's not on a drip. A healthy dose of carbon couldn't hurt either. Never lost any fish from it, but have definitely had some unhappy fish from it.

This.

Sorry just saw this thread.

Your parameters from the test appear fine in the pictures. The other filtration elements should be able to cope with the bio load if you reduce feeding.

What I would be much more concerned about is the anaerobic bacteria that multiplied in the canister while it was off. 3 days is a long time in a sealed oxygen deprived environment.

This is simplified and there's alot more going on than this but in a nutshell
canister unplugged--->aerobic bacteria uses up all the o2 and dies off (very quickly)----->anaerobic bacteria grows feeding off dead bacteria and waste in the filter.

Anaerobic bacteria waste in high volumes is toxic. (off the top of my head hydrogen sulfide I believe is one byproduct)
By plugging it back in without rinsing off the media & sponges it all got released into the tank.

Keep a close eye on everything. Bacteria infections can be difficult to diagnose until damage is already done.

Best of luck!

Why do you turn your filter off during water change?

The FX5 is a secondary filter. I use it as a backup bio source and as a pump for water changes. I DIY'd it up so that I can pump water out of the tank faster than a siphon ever could. I am also able to use the same hose and everything with a few turns of knobs to pump water back into the tank. It makes water changes effortlessly easy. I've only had this one accident with forgetting to turn the filter back on. All in all, the benefits far outweigh the risks.

Interesting thread. Kinda OT but how do you find that wlim filter? I was looking into them for my tank but the cost of getting it here was too much.

I'm a fan of it. It does a superb job. As you can see, it carried my tank through my poor performance of this FX5 deal with nary a hiccup.
