I had a 5 inch female GT with my 5" green/pumpkinseed sunfish, and my sunfish was fine up until he tried to mate with the GT (lol..) I'm left with a slightly fatter sunfish and a GT torn into 3 pieces.

I don't want another green terror (I guess they look so similar that they fight?) so I'm wondering if an oscar or a dempsey would work?

Considering the water is unheated at a nice 77°F, I'm sure I could get a cichlid to stay. I think I'll try a oscar, they seem to have a similar temperament.

Green Sunfish are territorial and have the attitude, however, they can back it up too. They will establish a section in the tank and any fish that crosses in that area, will be attacked. My green put his territory in the middle of the tank, which posed a problem for the bluegills.

I don't know if you will be able to successfully add oscars, etc...

My suns are a green/pumpkin seed hybrid, I'm not entirely sure how large they get, but they do not have greenie mouths. I'd imagine they won't get much larger than 6-8", oscars get bigger than that.

I'll try it out, worst case I have to remove the oscar and put him in another tank till I have time to return him.

A Green pumpkinseed hybrid would be a tough fish, (greens get to 11-13 inches max,Pumpkinseeds can get to 12-16 inches max). On youtube they have some videos of a guy who put two Greens in with his Oscars...at first the Oscars (who were a little bigger) bullied the Greens, but in the end he had to move his Greens to save his Oscars; having owned both Oscars and Greens I would have to say my Greens were more aggressive than the Oscars. Pumpkinseeds are not as aggressive as Greens but can still be a bit tempermental (alot like Bluegills) it would help to have dithers and plants. How many Pseed/Greens do you have in your tank?

Worst case, you will have a dead oscar!

How long were they okay for?

I ask because I have a GT that size in with a warmouth. They fight, but they just end up confused because they fight differently and don't understand each others cues. Nobody has been hurt...yet.
