Need some help w/ new ray

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Okay fellas,

I need some other suggestions. This new ray is knocking on death's door. He looks like a skeleton compared to my other two rays. I want to be patient but I'm worried he doesn't have the time. I shot live blackworms again right under his disk and he just hovers over them. Is the only thing I can do is be patient now? The other two rays aren't bothering him. Lights have been off since he's been in. What else can I do? Is there a safe way to force feed a ray?

The new skinny ray that I received Saturday died today. I know it's not anyone's fault but I was really in need of advice and received none other than to be patient.

It's really kinda funny, b/c if this would have been a leo, henlei, or pearl I'm sure some of the self proclaimed "ray experts" would have chimed in. I guess b/c it's "just" a retic. that nobody cares and figure they're a dime a dozen.

I'll stop venting. This ray was too far down the road and I don't think anyone could of saved him. He was literally just skin and bones. I didn't think I would get upset about losing a fish I only had for 3 days but this has ruined my damn day.

I just saw your post. Sorry for your loss. there is nothing you could do to make a ray eat. Try clean water and good food is all you can do:( . after that, its up to the ray:(

yeah seriously. there was nothing more you could do that you didnt already do. water, offer food, sit n wait. my ray was so sketchy when i brought her home. she didnt eat for a week and a half, thats about 10 days. she wouldn't touch anything but didnt feel comfortable. ive known retics to starve them selves especially at pup stage when there not fed properly b4 purchased. maybe the guys old it to you cuz he owned it for a month, but couldn't get i to eat. he dumped a problem off on you and what happened to you is what he didnt want to happen to him. he got his money back for a ray he couldn't get to eat.

yea, dude you want me to touch it and bring it back for ya, your the one who bought a ray

1. had showing pelvic bones
2. didn't make sure it ate before you bought it

both are cardinal rules for owning rays!!! so just suck it up and spend another $30, but this time make sure it EATS!!!

Damn, are you an ass in reality or just on the internet?

First, forgive me that I trusted a fellow MFK member and just looked at the ray shortly and took his word that he was feeding on krill.

Second, it's not about the money because we made a trade, the seller is making things right and returning what I traded him.

Third, this a Stingray forum. Giving and taking advice is a normal thing that occurs. Unfortunately in this situation I received none other than to be patient when I knew the ray had little time. That was my main problem.

Hopefully you don't have any problems keeping not one but two, nearly full grown retics in a 100 gallon aquarium. In the unfortunate event that you do have problems from keeping big rays in a small ass tank, maybe then you'll see where I'm coming from when you're seeking advice and receive none.

there is no other advice that can be given. you bought a ray that doesn't eat. and putting him in a new tank wasn't the thing to do. he shoulda been kept by the original owner who already had it in a tank until it was fat enough to survive a new aclimation and break in period. he was already skinny, then put in a new tank to be stressed let alone be with more ray's to stress it out. there wasn't a single thing you could do other then wait n see if it eats. what did u want us to say? pull it out and inject food in its stomach? you coulda done that if u chose to, but i wouldn't go tellin someone to do that.

DITO, I am sorry for your loss, I have lost my share of rays, and other fish, most due to inexperience, some because of bad fish from dealers, and some just died no matter what I did to keep it going.

Reality is that there is so many things that can be wrong with a fish, from bad shipping to uncountbale infections and diseases, that in such a short time period, it would be impossible for anyone to help out with any meaningfull information. If the ray was sninny and refusing to eat, having it in a very competitive tank could not have helped, but look at the bright side, the person that you traded with is being honest and making amends! I wish I had been so lucky with some of the shippments I have received in my life.

I have 3 reticulatas, they are healthy and eat a lot, all of them are as important as my other rays, as well as my Discus, I think that they are excellent rays to have, and hope you keep it going! Good luck!

yea its a small ass tank but ive had my rays for 5 years, and guess what they are fine! there's a section is the great freshwater stingrays book that describes control feeding and eating, i did that for 4 years, mainly because of laziness, but after they ate they have never shown pelvic bones or looked unhealthy. i'm currently feeding 2x a day! not to sound like an ass, i just don't see why you would vent and blame us for not being able to help, when it was clearly your fault, and when my money gets right i will get a new tank, but now its not, you dont need to worry about my rays and their little trailer home!!! lol!
