well i had a massive wipeout, all of my fish died in all of my tanks because the builders at my place used this polish on my flooring which made all of my fish drop dead over night. anyway when i was draining a tank, i saw there was an ornate who had survived all of this. he is very much alert and is swimming around the tank, playing with his reflection lol. he is about 9/10inches in size. he used to eat like a pig before all this happened, always trying to swallow more food then he can hold...now he will not eat anything and its been about 5 days. i am worried as someone told me they will sometimes go without food for 5 months or something? anyway i need some help...my water quality is the same after all of that stuff happened, i changed it immediately..everyday i am doing wcs - small ones so it can be clean and fresh..hopefully just try and encourage him to eat...anyone got any ideas? anne? need your help in this..

When they're stressed heavily they will stop eating. Keep up the water quality, stop feeding for a few days and try again later.

I'm glad to hear there was at least one survivor, I'm not surprised it was a polypterus :D

ok so i am just doing wcs every day, and i will try feeding at the end of this week, but he has already gone for a few days without eating.

How did you clean out the tank? That must have been some funky stuff. :(

You said your water quality is the same after all that happened, does that mean the levels are balanced, no ammonia and what not?

If it is stable, then cut back on the WC's to your usual schedule. Try to disturb the fish as little as possible.

Wish you and the fish the best Neervana.

thanks :) but something really weird is going on in my tank...there is a mass of algae growing in it everyday...almost unnatural growth...its is covered in it. i do wcs everyday and clean it out. but this is ridiculous.

Did this start after the fish kill, or before?

Heavy growth with algae sometimes is attributed to too much water change... I agree with the posts above if the water parameters are good the algae should balance out after a while... Might look ugly for a couple weeks but wont hurt the fish... Just do some scrubbing on the glass mean while.

no..this was after all the fish died...:( guys i am losing hope here

Don't give up, just cut back on the WC's to your normal schedule.

What are your water parameters? The spike in ammonia from the dead fish probably sent your tank into a mini cycle. I bet you're getting brown algae.

If you are, then Guppy's_hell is right, it will balance itself out eventually like a newly cycling tank.

I think you and the ornate are going to be just fine, he's lucky he has you. :) The other fish... not so lucky to have you.
