if you plan on getting a python you wont have much money (if any) to spend after you get one, my 50 footer cost more than 45 dollars and it was on sale

as for food, i would get any of the 3 hikari cichlid pellets (staple, gold, bio gold)

Cichlid Gold is good. What store is it? LFS or a chain? If its petsmart, make sure you print of the price the have online, so you'll save some money.

Re: sand in the filters. Get a sharp knife and cut your filter intakes so they're higher up, like 6-8" above the sand. The other thing you want is something to screen the sand from getting in...if you had a piece of the cloth that they make the activated carbon bags out of that would work, but if not raising the intakes will help.

dude dont wash your filter sponges or what ever media you have in tap water, it will kill all your bacteria, and your fish will die

That is not entirely true.

ya, python will take all your money. it's always good to have POND melafix and pimafix. last time i was at poopsmart, they had hikari cichlid staple on clearance for really cheap, but I don't personally buy the staple.

i wasnt gonna bother to go into detail such as tap water + filter spong = none / little bacteria + overstocked tank + possible overfeeds = ammonia spike = dead or ill fish. thats the basic logic, why do you think we PRIMARILY dechlorinate the water? DUH

And all this time I thought it was so the high levels of chlorine didn't instantly kill your fish. If the bulk of your bacteria is growing on a filter cartridge there would be a massive spike everytime you changed it. DUH!
