ok guys I need some help , I am no Bob Villa !
here is a little diagram I sketched up on making my new stand, its pretty vague ,
im just looking for some ideas on what I could do

here is what I have , I have a 125 tank and a 72 bowfront tank I want the 125 on top and the 72 on the bottom if anyone could give some ideas on making this a real nice stand I would greately appreciate it , if not I will just go on whats in my head I want to enclose it with plywood, with a wooden flap above the 72 so I can access it from the front , without being able to see the light strip and all the wires behind it !

thanks ,
Patrick

I like how you took a picture of your drawing..... I have a stand that I built that had a 120 on the top and bottom...... when I get home in 11 hours I'll take a picture of it and draw a picture for you.

The important thing to keep in mind is that wood has no shear strength. It has tremendous compression strenght. Think of like this: if you tack wood on wood and stress the tacked on part it will shear off. But if you stack wood on wood it won't compress and will hold up your weight. I drew this on paint to illustrate it, hope it helps.

Awesome DIY. Great Idea with the bow underneath. Keep us updated on your progress.

for the 4 corners Id double up the 2x4s (to be safe) other than that your plans look pretty good.

I doubt if you will follow me on this, but if you are halfway interested PM me and i will give you my # and talk about. Im thinking more cosmetic because everyone else already covered structure.
If i was the one building it i would surround the 72 in a thin peice of plastic or wood that was laid back into the rest of the stand about 4" or so... so all that you would see sticking out of the bottom is part of the hood and the "bow" part of the 72. It would also make a nice looking shelf on either side of the 72 that you could put food and other stuff on. If the plastic or wood was attached with velcro stuck to an angle it would make it easy to remove for maintenance as well. I really suck at describing things in type, but i think what i just sucked at explaining would look awesome!
