yup, just a clear protective cover. Or there are other types of filters, like circular polarizer and neutral density that give different effects to your pictures. But the UV filter you had is only for protection.USMCtanker;4605978;4605978 said:

Film camera sensors needed UV protection. Digital cameras do not, as sensors in almost all modern dlsr's are uv protected. So people are encouraged to buy clear/uv filters to protect the lens. Not required.

ok thanks guys. wish i would have taken photo now. im addicted to taken pics. alot of fun trying to catch that perfect shot.

Lens is fine, that's just a filter. Check out the size it says on it (72mm) and buy a replacement that size. Go for a UV filter, they're usually cheaper. check out amazon or something like that.
Read up on photography a bit, google the term "macro photography"
You don't want a 105mm lens, I'd stick with what you have until you get comfortable, then maybe pick up a 50mm or slightly less if you're specifically photographing close up subjects.

Just read your comment about the lens size. turn it til you're somewhere around 28-50mm, and if you set manual focus you can twist the outer ring to focus exactly on your fish the way you want to
im gonna haft to do some reading on what all the other things on the lens do lol, fun fun fun,, im glad its not as bad as i thoght, i thoght whole lens would be broke, glad its just a protective cover. whats the most inner ring do, has numbers like 26 16 11 8 5.6 3.5
