Is the coarser pool sand ray safe? Also, is it silica free?

I have a 110g 48X18 with just 25 lbs of play sand, and that is plenty, you may want to have more for Rays since they burrow. What size is your tank? Noticed yopu said you had an Umbee and an Aro, hope to god it's at least 300g's...

Yes ,I had my buddy who works with acrilic and fiber glass and built my a custom 600gl..and yes my umbie is an ass but for some reason ,he will not go near my arro at all...An my umbie is full grown...He and my pellani hate each other...

If your planning on switching over to sand, then i say DO IT!! Sand is much more nicer than gravel and will make your tank look so much more natural. I would use a overflow with a wet and dry filter if having sand as a substrate... sand will not flow high enough to get sucked into your overflow. As to Hang on back or cannister filters, the intake is somewhat towards the back and bottom of the tank where sand can easily get sucked into the intake causing noises and sometimes causing problems.
Fish wastes will not sink or get stuck under the sand, therefore your free from waste buildups that can get stuck and can easily cause polluted and fowl water. All the waste will just sit on top of the sand, When siphoning just hoover an inch or so above the sand and most of the fish waste will be removed, or sometimes if your fishes swim aggressively back and forth, that current will help with the removal of fish waste by getting sucked into the overflow!

I liked this idea... pool filter sand and Melanoides spp. make a nice combo. If I decide to change from river pebbles to sand I'll surely get a bunch of trumpet snails.

Best regards.

Daniel.
