Yeah they are insane. I was at the LFS today picking up some things and was looking at them. Very impressive. Put it this way, I walked away like I had starred at the sun for a few seconds, super bright lol

Hey josh, so will the coralline algae still grow with regular lighting?
Awesome question!
Your most colorfully Coraline - yellow, purple, green, pink, etc.. needs Hard Coral rated lighting for the coloration to POP so to speak.
Power Compacts produce more or less Red and Maroon, Str8 up Florcents will grow coraline but more often then not it will be the color White.
Well ended up getting a T5HO light its from Deep blue it has one 10,000k bulb, one Actinic-3 bulb, and LED moonlights.
The only thing that i don't like about it is that the LED are on all the time.
What type of corals would be good with this light and ones that are good for a beginner?
how many watts total? You have a 20 gallon tank so as long as you have 80+- watts total you will be ok to start.
The soft corals need roughly 3+- watts/gallon (so for you that's 60-80 watts of lights) . The hard core stuff needs 6-8 (for you that would be 120/160 watts)
The 50/50 spectrum was a good call.
This is going off what I have read of cource. I have not grown any coral yet. But plan too someday.![]()
So total you have 4 bulbs in the fixture?
Depending on what you like, I've found many LPS to be good beginner corals - Candy cane or Trumpet corals (caulastrea furcata), Frogspawn coral (Euphyllia divisa) Hammer coral (Euphyllia ancora), and most Mushrooms are easy to care for. Do a little research and find out what you like.![]()
sunslighting has a cheap one compared to its competitors. Its a 150 watt mhLighting really depends on what types of corals you want. If you want SPS, you'll want a high powered fixture something in the order of a 150 watt MH, or a 4 bulb T5HO fixture. If you are looking to keep mostly softies or some of the less demanding LPS a 2 bulb T5HO or even a larger Power compact fixture would work. I know for mushrooms and low light corals PC lights will do the job.
A 20g long will probably work to your advantage too since it is only 12 inches deep. Makes it easier for light to penetrate to the sand bed if you put corals there.
Do you have any corals in mind?
