I wouldn't do it. As cookiemonster stated, umbee are an open water predator. They need much more swimming space than a lot of cichlids. A 55 gallon would not give the fish a good quality life.

I'm growing out two (at about 3" now) and will hopefully get them into a 3300 gallon pond by the end of the year. Not a fish for the average hobbyists tank.

Just my opinion though.

well most of us have the same opinions about umbees male or female needs spacious tank waters since they are indeed open water predators...but we'll just let him have the female umbee since it is a free 7"...and you don't get to see or be given the chance to get one for nothing...I'd let him get and if somethings come up he can just re-home it and all that on the buy and sell section.Or he can build a small pond like say anywhere 180-500 gallons

It's ok to house it in an inferior tank because it's free? I really don't understand your post.

well lets just say, let him have his female umbee for his 55 gallon since you don't see a female umbee being given to someone for free outta no where. And if something has change in plans like if its too big for it or something like moving in such a manner...he can just post a FS: female umbee in the buy and sell section of this forum just to rehome it

but i know it may not end up being the happiest umbee you'll see but i must state that how can any of us know if a umbee is happy...so none of us should be saying any of our fishes are happy unless in a large bodied water.Besides you never know you may stunt the umbee even though it may reach 12" maybe a little more...you can't even put a 12" oscar alone in a tank at this size. But you can go ahead and take the umbee and then later on you can make the decision if you want to keep it and porbably make a larger home for it or sell (rehome it) later on
