need some Oscar advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have transfered the oscar to a 20G high for now. He got all beat up by the little 3.5" green sunfish.

He is in the tank now by himself with the following water params; pH=7.6, Amm.=0ppm, Nitrate=0ppm, Temp.=80F, trated with salt @ 1tbsp per 5gal.

He will stay alone until his scrapes heal and he grows some more.

any other advice would help.

P.S. THIS IS ONLY TEMPORARILY TIL HE GROWS ENOUGH NOT TO BE EATEN. thanks

Snag a 50 gallon rubbermaid at walmart for $17 and powerfeed the bejezus out of him.

What size tank is the Pbass in? Why not section off a portion of it with egg crate. Egg crate is very cheap, you can get it at any Home Depot or Lowe's for like $10-12. That way the O has plenty of water volume to grow up nice and healthy. At the rate they grow you won't have to have the egg crate in there long.

:iagree:

i agree with the egg crate idea, but thats good you put him in a little bigger tank, just make sure to keep the nitrates , low and he should be ok in there until hes big enough to not get eaten by the Pbass, though you may still have to section off the tank when he gets too big for 20g because in that time your bass will have grown as well, and yeah watch that sunfish those guys can be little devils, especially in warmer water

I've made dividers out of the plastic canvas stuff you get at arts and crafts strores. I used zip ties to piece together the sheets, and suction cups to hold it in place.

I'm sure New York has a usednewyork paper or something. Check thos out, you can find great deals on fish tanks in there. I find alot of people get frustrated with the hobby and sell stuff to people like us for cheap, sure makes me smile :)

Oscars are such tall thick quick growing fish you shouldn't have to wait long for yours to be able to co-habit your big tank. Pretty scrappy and resilient as well. Strange enough I had the same problem a few months back and due to a heater malfunction had to rush the process a bit. I put a 4-5in. Oscar in with a 9in. mono with my fingers crossed. The bass took a few inquisitive shots but after a few minutes gave up on it and let him be forever. Maybe I was lucky.
