Bichir chic, thank you so much for your detailed response. I've read just about all the Internet has to offer on Lungfish over the last couple days (unless you have more suggestions), and I feel comfortable that I could provide it with a satisfactory home. I'm at LEAST going to go look at it tomorrow and take it from there. I'm already looking for another tank to keep it in, just in case. To be honest I'd rather have the lung instead of the gar (my wife will kill me for saying that), so it may be worth the risk. I'll also be sure to ask about temperament while I'm there, along with previous tank mates.

Well I did it! It was surprisingly healthy, at roughly 1ft (didn't expect it to be 2ft like the owner said over the phone) already trained to pellet food. But the tank was gross, and it was in a 29g. At 32.00 after tax I couldn't say no. Now I just need to ID it to be sure of species. 20170303_165023.jpg 20170303_144504.jpg 20170303_165023.jpg 20170303_165023.jpg 20170303_144504.jpg 20170303_165023.jpg 20170303_144504.jpg 20170303_165023.jpg 20170303_144504.jpg 20170303_165023.jpg 20170303_144504.jpg 20170303_164946.jpg

Ok - that is a good looking lung fish. Congrats! I think about mine a lot. Stupid decision on my part - a realtor.... anyway, lungfish all look the same to me - the African/South American. Mine was deep gray with light spots and was an African, but there are a few varieties. Maybe someone else can help you ID. The African is the most common so it is most likely an African variety. Good luck, man. They are super easy fish. And don't think you can put cool tiny fish in with them, because that is one of the mistakes I did in the beginning. I thought hey, why not neon tetras? So I put like 30 in there and it looked cool but guess what, they - the group - started picking on my helpless lovely African lungfish. My lfs owner said that happens - when you get a school of tiny fish, can be 3 can be 20, etc - they will pick on a larger inhabitant. So = it's best to keep him a lone and if you want more in your tank, then simply get another tank for your lungfish. If money is a concern, like I said, Petsmart has good deals and Petco has yearly sales on tanks. Just can't get too many large tanks in Petco/Petsmart in certain areas for some reason. Here, like I said, where I live now, I can get a 150 or 125 tomorrow, but when I move it is only 75 and they won't even consider ordering you a larger one. Cheers!!

Thank you Bichir Chic! First off I really appreciate the detailed response. My main concern now is its current health, the LFS isnt known for its cleanliness.

So, lets assume the Lung is actually 2ft (like the owner says), could it feasibly eat a 7 inch Gar? I have read/seen videos of their giant mouths but have no experience with it in person. It will probably be a month or so until I can get it another tank to live in. The upside, the tank it will be going in for now is a 7x2x2 220g. Lots of space for the gar to hide if need be.

Again, I really appreciate everyones help and I will be taking every bit of advice into account before I decide to purchase or not.
. That gar will be a snack
