alright i set up a second 29g, it just finished cycling, and it will be going in my living room... i would like to have ONE big fish in it, its going to be bare bottom with a small piece of drift wood, and weekly 50% water changes... it has a fluval 205 canister

i was thinking of getting a single jack dempsey? a lot of people say its not doable but i figure with the bare bottom, and massive water changes i might be alright? ive also read a on a couple sites that it might work.

im open to other suggestions, but id like a cichlid, and id like it to be bigger than a convict or a firemouth, ill even order one off liveaquaria if its a strange type thats hard to find.

:naughty:

A 29g is not that big of a tank, so your choices are kind of limited. I personally have a 29g and am raising a single convict in it. But for me it is just a growout, when he gets bigger he is just going into my 210g. I would not get a JD because he will get way too big for it.

Have you considered a puffer? A lurker type like a Congo, or Mekong would be alright in that size tank. How about some African cichlids, some of the Tangs would work out in there.

also remember the tanks 30x13x19 ... should be fine for a 10" fish
Remember a 10" fish will create a lot of waste, so filter and change water accordingly. But based on water volume alone I wouldn't do it. The smallest I would want would be a 40g breeder for that type of fish.

i would go with a pacu, they fit just fine in a 29, for life :)

totally trollin^ dont get a pacu that was a joke. u could keep an oscar in there for a wile, then move to a 55gal, maybe breed convicts in there

Not gonna happen in a tank that size. Stick with the sub-7" fish; super-clean water doesn't make up for super-cramped space, it only keeps the fish healthy while it's stuck in the super-cramped space (not cool). I agree with DMD's suggestions. Some other cichlids you might also consider are jewels, sajica's, or festivums.

His thread is not very accurate. A 10" JD should be in no less than a 55g tank IMO, 75g would be ideal. For your 29g, I would just make it a community tank instead of 1 "big" fish. If you don't like the idea of a community though, you could always get a pair of black convicts. But be warned, they might mate and you'll have hundreds of fry in no time lol. & even they could outgrow the 29g...but it will take some time
