need suggestions for small to midsize colorful fish

ive been looking at red head geophagus sp. tapajos. anyone think these would work well?
 
only issue is, ive got gravel substrate (noit sharp grains though)... would that be alright?
 
hmm..I had a threadfin eartheater for a few days (traded it in, they sold it to me as a suri :S) and my gravel substrate that its like...rounded, and it did fine :D

alright. what size was it? i would be getting a juvenile since the small ones are cheaper.
 
i would not recomend kribs with the angel fish as they require different water paramaters, and even if they adapt to the exhisting conditions they can become rather aggressive during mating. rainbow fish would be a recomendation though as they age they should be given a larger home than 40 gal.
Corries are a must, as they are one of my favourites for a clean-up crew and when grouped in a planted tank they will play all day.

The suggestions for dwarf cichlids should be taken seriously as they can be wonderfully interactive fish in a community just be sure to do your due dilligence and read as much as you can before making your final selection.
