If you're worried about bowing clamp a piece of plywood along behind (or in front and and drill through the wood first) where you're drilling.

If you crack it, drill out the end of the crack with a drill bit so it won't spread and use a piece of scrap acrylic and Weldon to strengthen the area.

If you really want some help I could make it up there sometime for moral support and bring some scrap pieces and some Weldon "just in case".
 
I would drill it. Use a dimond drill bit they go much slower and are less aggressive. I actually used a wood door hole saw bit before. You'll be fine.

No need for a diamond bit on acrylic. Wood bit will be fine.
