Need tips on Dats

 • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the help. Thinking about selling all of them. going to move a few to other tanks and see if 2 in the big tank change

Moved all 5 dats into the 50 gallon, they stayed stable and out swimming around all night. Moved them back into the 125, they all layed down on their sides. Thought it was the clown knife spooking them so moved it to the 50 but they still layed there. Moved 2 into the 50 with the clown and now they're stable and swimming around. Water temp and ph are the same in both tanks. Don't know what's wrong.......

What environmental factors differ? Like substrate, flow, lighting, decor?

Nitrates etc test equal in both set ups?

I'm just throwing ideas out there

125 they were in has sand substrate, old dim fluorescent tubes, drilled sumped with a 1800 gph flow and a few plastic plants. The 50 has gravel bottom, T5 lighting and old emperor hob. Nitrates, ph and ammonia all test the same in both tanks. Only difference that I can see is flow and I'm testing that out right now. All the other fish in the 125 are out and about, it's just the dats.

Anytime you move them around tank to tank they will do that.... Swim around a lot, stable up for awhile and then back to unstable. My past dats that stayed stable were always not afraid of me, didn't mind being touched, weren't scared of water changes or stuff I was doing inside there tank and weren't afraid of there tank mates. Those are the ones you want.

I found the same ime

Well we sat back and tried to find the ones that hung out together and ended up with 3 tank that house dats now all have been stable for around 24 hours.
Still have one that not 100% stable he is the only one i can't put my hand in the tank and pick up.

Looks like the unstable one is a very shy, sensitive one :p

Anyhow nice dats in the video ya got there, jhawk.

Yeah he hates my cell phone anytime we get the phone or camera out he freaks out plus he don't like when we put small fish in his tank. Seems splitting up the 5 has made them all stable up but one and that one is very shy might just give him away and keep 4.

Dats prefer darker substrate in my experience. Maybe because they find it to be more camouflaged..? I don't know. I had regular white sand a few years back and all my dats were always hiding. Switching to black sand and manzanita wood has made my dats more 'open.'
