it took me six weeks to break my 16 inch payara into eating frozen smelt. at first i started dropping gold fish in the same spot and same time everyday so he can get into a routine. the ist few 4 days i gave him gold fish as much as he wants and i started to decrease the amount of gold fish i threw in in the ensuing days and at the same time i tried to drop some smelt in there. in the beginning he wouldn`t even touch it but as i stopped giving him gold fish, i only dropped smelt at the same spot and same time everyday. he did not eat for 3 weeks and finally he started grabbing the smelt. now he eats 4 smelts every other day. good luck
