I got out of my last contract (up here in Canada) by telling my provider I was moving to an area that they didn't cover, they let me out in 6 minutes and it didn't cost a thing.

I was able to get out of a Verizon contract by notifying them that I was about to leave on deployment to the middle east...but that was about eight years ago...not sure how it may work now.
I currently have a family plan with four lines through Verizon, and I pay about $180 a month for unlimited text, and 2100 minutes (of which we use about 600 per month). They have that "circle of friends" where 10 numbers are free, and you can change it anytime using their website. It works for my family...
As far as cheap (relatively) and unlimited, you could check out Cricket. I'm not real sure what their coverage is like.
I carried a Sprint phone with my last company, and my personal Verizon phone as well. I typically had better coverage through Verizon. I also traveled between 22 different states. Staying local and in a major city, it really shouldn't matter who the carrier is.

Verizon no longer lets you out for deploying. They simply suspend your service. I know this for two reasons. 1) I am a verizon customer and currently deployed. 2) My wife works for verizon and all my soldiers who have verizon went through her to suspend the service.
Kahuna: You could tell them that you are moving out of the country. That sometimes helps. If you would like, PM me and I will try to get some info out of my wife to help you out. She hates the customer service too.
