‎‎ So I am building a 8'X3'X30" (just under 450 gallons)tank for my garage. Right now I have a 135 gallon that houses a Jag (9"), Festae(6"), Texas(6-7"), and a Green Severum (6-7"). All the fish in the tank get along pretty well actually. They have been together since very small, but the tank is just getting too small.

I also have a 120 gallon "show" tank in my house that has 8 Clown Loaches (4"-9"), a Jack Dempsey(7"), a Green Terror (5") and have 5 Geo Tapajos (2") growing out in my 30 gallon that will be going to one of the tanks as well.

I am absolutely buying a Black Aro (always wanted one)for the big tank in the garage when its finished so I’m trying to figure out how to arrange my fish. Do I try to put the more peaceful fish in the garage with the Aro while putting a single (Jag) or maybe the Jag and one other in my show tank? Or do I keep the "Monsters" in the garage and go for more colors (Geo Tapajos) in my 120.

Here’s a few Options I came up with but feel free to give me your opinions

Option #1

8'X3'X30"
1 - Black Aro
8 - Clown Loaches
5 - Geo Tapajos
1 - Jack Dempsey
1 Green Terror
1 - Green Severum
1 - Festae?

120
1 - Jag
1 - Texas

Option # 2

8'X3'X30"
1 - Black Aro
1 - Jag
1 - Texas
1 - Festae
1 - Jack Dempsey
1 - Green Severum

120
5 - Geo Tapajos
8 - Clown Loaches
1 - Green Terror

I have also thought other ways but just wanted to put something down. What you do think?

Personally I would put everything in the big tank and have a Jag and a catfish in the 120 as your wet pet.

Of the rest, Fastae is a bit more aggressive than the rest but size of the aquarium and number of other fish should defuse its aggression a bit.

Sev and geos in the 120. The rest in the other tank.

Im a fan of option #2, only I would swith the GT and Severum.

Another option would be: Everyone in the 450 besides the Jag, who would be in the 120 by himself.

Are you getting rid of the 135? I am assuming so since it's not listed in either option, if not then that opens up a whole new realm of possibilities.

Also, I am very interested in your garage build, how do you plan on heating and cooling with the crazy weather we have here in our neck of the woods? (this question may be for another thread)

The reason I have the severum with the rowty crowd is bc other than the jag and texas he is more aggressive than every other fish.

I guess the original option #2 makes more sense now; otherwise I stick by my original secondary option of a lonesome Jag in the 120 and the rest of the group in the 450.

In the cichlid world, two fish in a smallish tank is not so good for the smaller of the two...the bigger one will also be battle scared.

I will either be gettin rid of the 135 or using it as a sump for the larger tank.

As far as the extreme temperatures we have here in Texas. I have insulated my 135, put a tight sealing cover on top and use 3 300 watt heaters (two in the tank and one in the sump). I actually have more problems with keeping the tank cool in the summer than warm in the winter. What I figured out was to take a fan and run it across the top of the water. This fixed the issue and no matter how hot it gets the hottest I've seen the tank get with the fan on is 82. It really suprised me how well this worked, however with the top open and the fan blowing be ready to top off the tank every few days. The evaporation is crazy.

With this tank build I am going to insulate it better and hopefully this will help the situation. I really dont want to have to use the fan next summer but at least I will have something to fall back on.
