If you have read my recent post about my sick catfish you will know I am thinking about putting it out of his misery. As much as I dont want to I think it would be best for the fish. I have never had to do this before so what is the most humane way to go about this? He is a little guy maybe 4-5" long I have had him for 4-5 years now this really does suck but I think its best this way!

Go buy some clove oil, I would be willing to bet $100 that anyone after me suggests the same thing. I have personally not used it, but I have seen a few threads on here just like this one and it is what everyone recommends.

Major bummer to lose your fish, especially one you have had for so long. Doesn't take but a month to feel attached to a fish, I cant imagine how it will be once I have had mine for 4-5 years. But really, clove oil will put the fish to sleep, then basically it just goes all numb I guess and passes on. I don't know how much you have to use or whatever, but you put the fish in a bucket, put in a bunch of clove oil and the dead is done quick and painless.

If for any reason you didn't want to go with clove oil, I have also heard of putting the fish in a bucket of ice water. If you where going to do this I would fill a bowl or something with enough water to hold the fish, like just enough, then fill the rest with ice and throw the whole thing in the freezer for awhile to seriously drop the temp. After maybe 30 minutes in the freezer the water will be so cold that if you dropped the fish in it would die instantly and feel no pain I would think. It would just shock its heart so fast it would not even know what happened. Most people just suggest ice water, but I don't think this would be cold enough to do it quick enough. I would want the water as cold as possible.

Again, sorry to hear about your fish. I hope this helps it pass in the most humane and painless way possible.

I have heard to just put the fish in a plastic bag then put it in the freezer, but that sounds kinda like a bad way to go for me!

Stick an m80 in it's mouth and light the fuse!

No, I'm kidding! I agree completely with JayK! I just wanted to see if he's willing to dish out the hundred bucks for not recommending the same thing he did!

m80 hmmm that may work, but I would rather not, think Im gonna go with the ice water. I need to do it now so I will let you guys know how it works

Clove oil really would be the most humane way.

I couldn't imagine dying by freezing in water! That would suck!

Humane = painless. I know this may sound inhumane, but what about throwing it really hard against a hard surface? It seems like that would be so quick the fish wouldn't really feel much.

I knew something like that was coming...so where do I send the check? I will get right on it...although I would most likely not hold your breath...

ph: hope it works okay for you, the problem with putting them in a bag and just tossing them in the freezer is that their body temp would slowly drop and they would suffocate long before they began to freeze to death. You effectively need to instantly drop their body temp below a degree they can sustain life. That is why you need a large body of water that is EXTREMELY cold to instantly drop that temp. They will not actually freeze and become rock hard, but their heart and internal systems will instantly stop working if the water is cold enough. Toss that bowl in the freezer with as little water as you can to completely cover the fish and as much ice as possible, leave it 30 minutes to seriously drop the temp in the water or until the top of the water is just crusting over with ice. Break it up with a fork and drop the fish in. Instantaneous. The only reason I say as little water as possible is because that will allow it to drop in temp a ton faster. Best of luck!

ps - no more $100 hand outs for disagreeing!

If you're going to go that way, it would be better to smack it in the head with a hammer. If you try and throw a fish, it could easily slip out of your hand and you may end up dropping it and hurting it worse before you actually get the job done.

He needs to go now he is really suffering, couldnt get the clove oil till late evening tomorrow. I imagine the ice water will take care of it pretty quick, cant be any worse then what he is feeling right now! What ever he has is just eating away at his flesh really bad, plus I can see he is also starving I am able to see his skull line! I wish i would have caught this earlier, but like I said in my prior post he hides so well I go weeks without seeing him at all!
