Hey guys I need to seal some plywood I am useding for a top for my big tank. I don't know what kind of sealer to use. I was going to use marine paint but found that alot of the marine paints have copper in them and it might harm my fish. then I got to thinking that I would use a might basement sealer/paint. But I talked to the guys at lowes and they didn't know if that type of paint would hold onto wood b/c it's made for concrete. the guy at lowes thought a good coat of high glosss acrylic might seal it well enough but I don't know now i'm worried. And I need to have this thing made THIS weekend. I will have it made but I need to sealed also. So what Can I get from a hardware;/paint store to seal. Can I get a good acrylic and then maybe a topcoat sealer? What do I do. HELP

Is it just the hood? Your worried about evaporation rotting the wood? On my hoods I just put several coats of polyurethane and the water does not get through it.

Well it's not really a canopy but a top made out of plywood and acrylic instead of glass. I need to paint or coat it white of light blue to help reflect light. I could poly it but I really need to get some color on it too. And yes the worry is about the wood rotting.

Yep. Just spray on some polyurethane spray (I use the Minwax). You can get it at Lowes.

If you can let it sit out for a few days to evaporate the vapors and you're ready.

Ok, then maybe the Krylon Fusion at Wal Mart will do it. A lot of folks here use it to paint plastic that is going underwater. I've used it also with no problems. Again, if you can let it set awhile to leech out the vapors that would be a plus.

What brand I don't think I have either seen epoxy paint or I didn't look that hard.

I have used the krylon but I fear that the plywood will soak up to much paint I Don't like to rattle can wood b/c it seems to soak up so much and at around 4 bucks a can I think I would end up using like 10 cans. But I great Idea if I wasn't scarred of lossing the use of my thumbs from pushing the spray can top all day lol.

I Like the epoxy paint but I need to knwo if I can get it from lowes or home depot. or where else.

Epoxy paint (used too?) comes in a spray can and you should be able to get it at Home Depot or Lowes. It is also called appliance paint. It is extremely moisture resistant and durable. It's like what they use on a stove top. If you paint the interior of your hood white it will reflect good too!

I will have to look into that. I hope I can find it brushable. If not I will look into tone of those spray paint tops that will set on the can and push the botton for you lol. Thanks Guys. I will let you know if I find anything tomorrow

How large is your hood? Shouldnt take that much.

See if you can get the Fusion or the epoxy paint in the small can. Much more economical. Roll it on with a small foam roller.
