never heard people being allergic too it. that sucks. weird how the body works. and the fact that it can just happen, even though you've been handling before

Wow that is the first time I have never heard of an allergic reaction to blood worms but I guess you can be allergic to anything. Definitely get some gloves and avoid contact with them all together. The epi-pen would be a good safety option.

ya, i got some gloves, but scicne alot of my smaller fish shy from all food but bloodworms i cant avoid them alotgether.....i havent had a reaction for a few nights so it seems like the gloves r working....if i have another bad reaction ill def make an apointment with the doctor....i havnt seen a phisiscian in over a years.......hate to break my streak for a minor allergy to fishfood:screwy:

Don't scratch your butt

Butt? I'd be more worried about scratching my groin.

I looked this up and all I could find, other than threads, was this little article from Practicle Fishkeeping.

Scientists describe bloodworm allergen
Medical scientists have described an allergen found in bloodworms that may affect fishkeepers.

The paper, which has just been published in the Journal of Investigational Allergology and Clinical Immunology, describes the case of a 23-year old Spanish patient who became ill after feeding bloodworms to his fish.

His symptoms, which included a rash, rhinoconjunctivitis (a combination of rhinitis and conjunctivitis), breathlessness and difficulty swallowing, led to doctors trying to determine the cause of the allergic reaction.

After investigating a number of other allergens, ranging from mussel, squid, house dust and dust mites to prawns and mosquitos, the study eventually revealed that the man was allergic to Chironomid midges, and their larvae - bloodworms.

The study says that Chironomid allergies are rare and are only seen in those who handle bloodworms used for fish foods.

Practical Fishkeeping has previously printed a letter in the Ask the Experts column from a reader who suffered from the condition.

For more details see the paper: Cabrerizo Ballesteros S, de Barrio M, Baeza ML, Rubio Sotés M (2006) - Allergy to chironomid larvae (red migde larvae) in non professional handlers of fish food. J Investig Allergol Clin Immunol. 2006; 16(1): 63-8.

I WOULD BE CAREFUL AND GET SOME BENADRYL ( SP?) IN CASE IT GETS WORSE....OFTEN ALLERGIES GET WORSE WITH REAPEATED EXPOSURES.....
ALSO CORTISONE CREAM MAY HELP.........

I WOULDNT MESS AROUND WITH ALLERGIES. IT CAN BE SERIOUS !!!!! SORRY IF I SOUND LIKE A PARENT BUT I AM...........:grinno:
