Need urgent advice!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the room that i keep my fish in is slightly warm-ish. its nearly always at 25-26deg c without a heater in the tank...is this too warm for the galaxy sh?

I don't know to much about them but I think I read they suffer from fungus and some other skin complaints if they're kept at tropical temperatures. What sort of temperature is the room at normally?

25-26deg. so how would i keep my tank cooler, is what i want to know.

Hi
Don't know what temp you are trying to keep tank at but using fans probably will fluctuate up and down a bit depending on the heat in the room at different times of the year.
Another solution would be a fish tank chiller don't know much about them but I know they use them in reef tanks, cold water marines and I have seen them used for fishing bait when they want to tank it for a while.
They do cost a bit but you will get better stable results in temp just Google (fish tank chiller)and see what you think or if it is worth using over cost to run, remember they probably use a bit of electrickery!:)

Hope this helps Jerry

basically i really would love to have this channa. and im willing to go to any lengths to provide the right temp. so am i going to need a fish tank chiller for this as Jerry says? I don't mind buying one.

oh and btw thanks jerry for the info :D

Hi
So you have got closer to deciding,so this page you might want to read, good site and good info and guide lines given on 3 types of chillers you might want to use.

http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/item.php?news=1012

I have also read somewhere that they cannot be working in a confined space (in tank cabinet)they need lot of ventilation!.

Hope this also helps Jerry

Have read in this sticky about the sub tropical species. ( assam, bleheri etc )
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=124841

The same apply`s to the species you want to aquire, but they apparently like it even cooler.
Would suck to spend 150£ on this beauty and 6 month`s down the road its being eaten alive by a bacterial infection wich you can`t do anything about.
You should prolly aim at roughly 16 degrees celcius in the winter time and just below tropical temps in the summer (roughly 22 degrees celcius). But like gigas12 said, small periods of time in tropical temps properly wouldent hurt it.

A chiller wouldent be a bad thing, then you can control your temps in the tank without worryìng about fluctuations caused by rising air temprature`s.
But keep in mind, chillers expensive buying and using (electrical bill).

thanks for the links! yes, it has all been really helpful :) i read those stickys ages ago but for some reason i completely forgot about looking at them!!! think i am going to look up a few chillers. if im gonna spend money on this then im going to make sure im taking the right steps to ensure it survives

Hi Neervana.
I was going to buy a blue moon galaxy at one point, but I went with a couple of Channa sp. Redfin instead.

The colors on the galaxy are gorgeous.
I believe they are a variant of Stewartii and get to around 25-30cm

They are sub tropical, but really do require low end of the sub tropical temps more than most SH.
Higher temps will simply make it an unhappy inactive SH, and it's coloring will not be as nice.

There is a few users here that own them, I'm sure they will add / correct my information.

Also, be sure it is a Blue Moon Galaxy before spending big on it, as there is so many mis-labelled "galaxies" going on!

Cheers, good luck!
