Need urgent help... really sick GT

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sucks to see such a nice GT going down like that. That's why I gave up on them, they are suseptable to so many diseases.

I decided to put him down this morning. He was not going to recover and his face was looking worse so I made the hard decision to put him down. Thanks everyone who helped. Now im of on a hunt for another big gt.

To answer your previous question, you are pouring hydrogen peroxide/iodine on an open wound.. Of course it would be painful. Sorry for your loss, and good luck with your hunt for another GT.

Woah, it's really creepy how fast this happened... one day he's a healthy adult GT and next day he's practically dead... But you did a good thing by putting him down, he looked really bad in the last few pics. Good luck!

Here is an old pic to remember him by. taken about 2 months ago.. He was 9" when I measured him today... Not sure what im going to do with his female maybe try and find her another large male.... But htis guy is irreplacable he was always glass banging and begging for food... Im really going to miss this guy may he R.I.P.

I have to disagree. I have raised a few of these in my time and have not noticed them to be any more suseptable to diseases than any other cichlid, however they do require some specific needs that must be met in order to sucsessfuly to raise them to adulthood. You could say they may not necessarly be sutable for a beginer but if their needs are met they are no harder to take care of than any other. The argument may be made that they shouldn't be sold so readly and as a result of insufficant care they seem to be more delicate but to say they are more suseptable to diseases is not true. Konwledge is the key to sucsesfully raising these guys like all other cichlids.

Any specifics on the proper way of raising them? I would appreciate any input; I just got five 1-2" juveniles. I have done some research already but would like some more advice from past experiences.

Like Tom I've never thought of GT's as a hard to keep cichlid, or to be any more susceptible to disease than any other cichlid. Clean water, a good diet, an overall low stress environment where the fish aren't fighting 24/7, and if the genetics are sound you typically shouldn't have any problems.
