Drilling the holes will keep your sump from siphoning your tank. It lets air in when the water is below the hole and breaks the siphone.

im trying to set up my wet dry. my problem is my external overflow box is out running my sump or when i shunt one of the drain lines the external box overflows.can anyone tell me what im stuck on other than stupid.

Does this mean your sump is overflowing evn while the return pump is running? If so reduce the amount of water you have in your system. Everyone else it right on with the hole in the return line solution.

Does anyone have a photo of where to drill the hole in a simple return? I have vinyl tubing leading from by wet/dry up to a directional U-Tube that hangs on the back of the aquarium. Is the hole drilled in the U-Tube, or the vinyl tubing? Thanks.

Dr. Joe said it best. Put it at the lowest water lever you normally have.

And Scull, those are return lines. Those are Durso intakes, those hole even the pressure to keep them quiet.

I am the worst artist in the world but here is a simple little drawing I main on MS Paint.

Ok guys call me stupid lol but what exactly is the return line. Can someone take a picture of the exact line that i need to drill? I appreciate all the help. I understand why I need to drill the whole just not sure where, and what exactly are you are calling the return line. Dont mean to beat a dead horse i am just wanting to get this right. Is the return line the U shaped tube that connects the the boxes that are connected and slide over the top of the tank.

Thanks for the help
