I have a 75 gallon tank that is stocked with 12 african cichlids I have been using 2 bio wheel 400's emperor's and i just got a eheim 2217. Could the new eheim keep the tank good on its own for month untill i get the 2nd one?? I have the tank 3 feet from my bed so the noise is the issue with the 400's. Oh and if it makes a difference I do a 50% wc weekly.
Thanks for the read,
B.

Is the 2217 cycled? In my opinin, a cycled canister with bio media in it and weekly 50% water changes should keep everybody happy. I would test your water frequently, you can always throw in extra water changes as needed.

You need to either transfer the bio media over to the canister or leave the emperors running while the canister gets established. That latter option would take about a month or two. Do emperors have bio wheels?

I don't like bio wheels... But I'm wondering since the majority of the bacteria is on them if you could just physically place them in the tank water and remove the filters themselves and have the canister running...

I don't see why it wouldn't work, I've just never done it with a bio wheel personally. I'd also get as much gunk out from the mech part of the filter into the tank water. Should be fine... You could always spend $10 and get a bottle of stability for insurance. I just cycled yet another tank with it.

:iagree: Possibly dangle the biowheels in the outflow of the canister. Also, if you can take your filter pads and put them inside the canister, that would help a lot too! (not sure how eheim canisters are, but it's fully possible with Fluval canisters) Maybe you will have to cut the filter floss off the cartridges, and place them in the canister that way.

Stability is another good insurance policy.
