ok well heres the thing. My friend who has been into fishkeeping for about 5 years has a 40 gallon tank with two 7 '' bala shark, two 7 '' parrots, about 4 adult convicts, a 9'' jag , and some type of puffer around 8 '' when i first saw his tank about 4 years ago i told him he had two many fish in the tank but he replied that by over crowding it and making lots of hiding spaces that the fish would not bother eachother.
whats your opinion on this?

the reason i am asking is because i currently house a female red devil in my 60-65 gallon tank and was planing on growing out some fish and dumping them in the tank with her. shes around 9 inchs and around 5 years old

You just end up with a huge bio load and one or two dominant fish forcing everyone else into their hiding places 24/7.

so not a good idea in your opinion? im still wondering how all the fish have lived so long with no problems.anyone know why? and for some reason he cant add anymore fish cause evreytime he does they kill the new fish. and they dont harrass each other the fish dont look streesed at all

Your friend obviously doesnt know crap, i wouldnt even put a 9" Jag in there alone.
He is overstocking his tank and is a crappy fishkeeper who has a lot to learn.

yes thats what i told him but i guees hill learn the day his fish die loll but for now im trying to get his jag :) BUT WHY ARE THEY ALIVE DOESNT THAT BUG YOU WHEN U TRY EVREYTHING TO KEEP YOUR FFISH ALIVE AND THEN YOU SEE SOMEONE DOING EVREYTHING WRONG AND HIS FISH ARE FINE LMAOO

Having a crowded tank isnt a big deal. If he can house all those species together more power to him. Im surprised that the jag and puffer could co exist with everything. He just has to make sure that his filtration is adequate for all the fish. I would say dont try it for urself. Ur friend got lucky getting them to coexist. There is a high percentage that it wont work out. The reason why he cant add more fish because a 40 gal is pretty small to house all those fish and everything in there already marked there territory. Im sure if u had a lil closet to live him u wouldnt want 3 of ur friends to move in.

I think in the end it will just cost you money, and some fish their lives. I honestly don't think that my she devil would allow any thing to live in her tank. Just my 2 cents.

Probably the reason they "coexist" is because they grew up together. I find that fish that grew up to have more tolerance with each other. Like when he tries to add new fish that they get the living hell beaten out of them. Tell your friend about this site, it'll help him... a lot.

nah hes one of those guys who doesnt like to be wrong and doesnt like to be told hes wrong. he hears what he wants to hear lol. and those fish did not all grow up together he added difrent fish at difrent times its just that recently he cant add anymore fish. the last fish that was added into that tank was the jag since then hes added a 7 inch oscar and a 8 inch jackdemsey and they both died after a week, he buys his fish full grown

Is it me or how could a Jag fit in a 40 gallon for five years!!! First off, those fish are not healthy especially that poor Jag-Jags are supposed to get anywhere from 12-16 inches-I would suspect if you posted a pic of your friends Jag that it would look deformed. There is no defending this guy!! And no he didn't make it work-yes the fish are alive but it does not neccessarily mean they are happy and healthy. I could live in my room for the rest of my life and eat hot dogs only-I may live for awhile-that doesnt neccessarily mean that I am happy or healthy.
