Needle Fish Ripped Throat

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Your "needle fish" is most likely a small asian gar,Xenentodon cancila which is not to say it will stay small for long. These fish are skittish and jumpy, and with your Red tails/ Rainbows may not be a good match. You may have a few dead fish from stress. As far as the injury goes, I would watch it and keep close watch on the water, doing your changes is a good thing....If you keep your water pristine it will most likely heal on its own. Keep a tight canopy on as well as many of these fish will jump at shadows and end up on the floor........Hope this helped, D

If you got it from Pesmart then yes it's a Needlefish and yes they are brackish water fish. Petsmart labels them as freshwater because they could care less and just want to sell them. Here is a pick of my two guys in a brackish water tank. They have been in here for about a year and are as healthy as can be. The one on the left just ate so he has a buldging belly.

After doing some research on these I would definetly say it's one of them. But I've also read they don't need to be brackish and can be completely fine in freshwater. I guess we ll have to see.

But thanks for all the help

I used to think a 180 was big until I logged on here:WHOA:

not a Gar or a brackish. an Amazon Needlefish. post a pic of the teeth cuz I saw one on Animal Planet (they were searching for rare fish) and I remember big triangular teeth like a Great White Shark
