i have 3 needle nose Gar 4 Senigal bichirs(1 of which is albino!) and 1 fire mouth chiclid. Ive hear that its good for the needle nose gar to have a bit of salt in their tank. how much? and will this effect any of the other fish in the same tank?

Needle nose gar do not need any salt. But a commonly misnamed needle fish may need some salt. There are several different species of needle fish. Some are in the amazon river and have no salt in the water. And then there are some that occur in asia. And those are considered a brackish fish because they venture into fully salt water as well as fresh. I have a 12''er that came in with a brazil shipment to my lfs and i have never had it in a brackish tank. Or added any regular salt to its tank ethier. But most all frshwater species can benefit from some table salt in there water every now and then. It helps promote a better slime coat which is there defense against skin diseases. And also helps with stress and nitrite poisioning. So if you wanted to add some. The most common amount is 1TBS per 5g or tank water. And you can use anything from regular iodized table salt to fresh water aquarium salt. As long as its not saltwater salt its fine.

Wow, u pretty much have the same fish as me!!! I have bichirs and needlefish and other fish like thoses too. U probably can buy thoses water refiners, then buy a chlorine remover.

Hope this helps!
