Needle nose in 55 gal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ive done some research on gars because I was considering purchasing one for my 55g also. From what I learned you can keep a needlenose in a 55 for a long time, but...it must have a tight lid because needlenoses are jumpers, second, once the needlenose begins to get larger, it will need a larger tank because they may break their snouts on the glass when startled. I do not believe there are any other types of gars except the aligator, which gets waaaaaay to big!!!! Good luck.

these were cool fish. i had a trio in a 45 high tank. i got video tape of them breeding/spawning. was pretty cool. i got rid of them though cause even though i got all the eggs to hatch, i couldt get any food that they liked. tried brine shrimp, dried fleas.....baby new born guppies were to big. finally got some baby chichlids from a friend and got a handful of them to double in size just from one meal. then they could take the baby guppies. had a fungus go through and kill them though :(

i dont know my brother inlaw had one in a 55 and it got so big 16" that it could not turn around in the tank, itwould just back up poor fish was suffering it could not catch feeders unless they were stuipd enough to swim in front of him. i have the fish now in a 220 gal pond, but i didn't know they wre jumpers!! the pond is inside do you think the chances dwindle with the bigger tank ?

Of course there are more types of Gars:

LONGNOSE GAR (Lepisosteus osseus)
FLORIDA GAR (Lepisosteus platyrhincus)
SPOTTED GAR (Lepisosteus oculatus)
ALLIGATOR GAR (Atractosteus spatula)
CUBAN GAR (Atractosteus tristoechus)

And, as stated by some other MFKers, the needle nose fish is not a Gar.

so would a needle nose gar be fine in a 180 gallon? i would love to have a gar one day (even though its not a true gar)
