Is it possible to put a needlefish in a 55 gallon tank? Th tank dimentions are 48x21x13 ( i think) but it is a standard 55 gallon

i guess you might be able to, considering that they stay around 10 inches in captivity. you will want to make sure that you don't spook the fish, as he will likely hurt himself on the tank walls if he gets scared

Ok, the tank is in my room so there is not alot of comotion only when people want to see it so comotion will not be a problem also would I be able to have a senegalus bichir in with him so senegalus on the bottom and needle fish on the top??

Thanks

i think that should work out. i know my senegal is doing fine in his new 55 gallon, and he doesn't use the top an awful lot, so they should work out fine. heck i might even get one since our local earl may's has them in right now......but i hear you can't always get them off live food.

Needlefish are predatory so you wouldn't want to get them off live food anyway! you should be able to keep one in a 55 just fine but they do spook easily. The best way to keep them from spooking is to keep them in a group.

why would them being predatory make you want to keep them off live food? if you get them on prepared foods its MUCH better for both you and the fish. the fish gets more nutrition out of it, and you don't have to buy a big supply of feeders that could carry disease.

if you can get it onto prepared foods such as shrimp, frozen mysis shrimp, frozen blood worm and if you are really lucky floating cichlid pellets.

that's it. you and me, dance fight, now...

this one must just come down to personal preference. I like to watch fish eat other fish so I like to quarantine then feed. my bad.

Even if I cant get it off live foods I have guppies and ghost shrimp breeding. In their own tanks of course.

don't get me wrong, i LOVE watching a fish eat another fish, its pretty damn cool! i always keep spare minnows on hand for my senegal and i have to for my leaf (won't take prepared) but if i could i would only use them as an occasional treat for the fish (and me lol)

I have a needle fish in my 55 gallon right now, hes about 8-9 inch and have had him since he was about 5inch. As far as getting them off live food, that is not needed when you only have one. You will not need to buy a big supply of feeders. I get about 25 fat heads a week for him and my Dat from my LFS. They are one of the harder fish to get off live foods. Mine will actually eat the cichlid pellets, so I guess i'm lucky but I would never try and get them to eat that as a main source or even on a regualr bases. Bottom line is it will do fine in a 55G and if you really dont like the feeders and cant get them on frozen or dry foods, you can always go with crickets (just make sure they aren't to big)
