Okay so Im looking at buying a needlenose "gar" to go in my 150g with my oscar and my balas. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if these need salt or not, some sites say they do others dont say they so I dont no. please help me out here lol

if its X. cancila I would say no...however I don't like them with active feeders like oscars and such

needlenose are a very docile fish if it can't fit in their mouths. My florida gar beat the heck out of the one I had. and my Oscar would harass it even while the Oscar was a baby. They would liekly be fine with Balas and other large non-aggressive tank-mates. They also like to be in groups as a general rule. and are notoriousely hard to get offa live feeder fish.

as fro salt, I never kept mine in salt or even brackish water. though some species seem to require it.

Seems like youd be better off sticking with active fish in one tank, non actives/slow fish in another. Balas, Oscars, etc are active, will most likely out compete the needle nose 'gar' for food.

Maybe try putting a couple 'gars' along with a couple other ancient fish in another 150g.. some slow moving fish that will have an equal chance/opportunity to get fed.. i was thinking of adding some Balas to my 70g with my juvenile Delhezi, but seeing as theyre technically blind, i'd be better off to add other bichirs or a couple ropes... something with a simular activity level/eating habit...

oh I figured the "gar" would have a better chance of since it swims at the top.
