So I dont have a salt tank...no one prob even has seen me before over here haha But I do find salt water tanks really interesting.

My neighbor has a small salt tank, pretty cool. I took some pics with my cell phone tonight. It is a 30g Eclipse tank and it seems like he has nothing but trouble with it. It always seems like he always has ick or some fish is always dieing on him. Right now he has some crazy spinny thing that is lossing its spines, not sure if thats bad or not...

So anyway, I thought I would just pop in here for him and show you guys some pics, see what you all thought of eclipse tanks. Are they just garbage and dont work at all or can you have success with them if done right? I have tried to get him on here, he has roamed around, but maybe if I can get this going for him he will come on and check it out.

So I will answer anything I can and keep trying to get him to come check this out.

Thanks!

damn the pictures are turned sideways...let me see if I can fix it

...got it :headbang2

i see the first problem. that tang (powder brown or powder blue) belongs in atleast a 6 foot tank. Tangs without ample room to roam will become stressed and maybe the source of the Irritans disease.

You can by rights have success with any tank, but there comes some limits. I would like to know a lot more about the tank before i start with possible causes.

Lets start with the obvious.

Water test readings??

Source of water?

material in filter??

other fish??

how does he acclimate fish??

these are just a few questions that we'll have about the tank, so the more info the better.

One way he can get rid of the irritans disease now would be to let the tank sit fallow for about 3 weeks or longer. This will ensure that the disease has no host to survive on

I agree seeing a tang in an eclipse makes me sad. Might as well be back at the LFS he came from. As previously stated, they need ALOT of room to swim and that is not cutting it

Also it looks like he has a lunar wrasse in there..........has he even looked up how big that will get? I'm guessing not based off the fact he has a tang in there too.

Things need to change in that tank quickly or nature will make the change for him :(

totally. shame on him. it bugs me when people go spend all this money on fish and equipment and dont research anything:duh:

Told him that the fish has to go if he wants it to work, he said okay. I think he is looking into bringing it back to the LFS this weekend. Any suggestions on fish that would be cool in a 30g?

Fallow I am assuming means empty? Does that mean no live rock, no inverts no fish, nothing? Leave the lights on their cycle and heater and filter on?

Yes there is a wrasse in there too, I told him that needs to go as well. This is his first tank I believe and most def his first salt tank. Thats why I popped in here to see what people had to say, maybe learn the kid a few things:D I think you could blame the LFS's as much as him, they should have asked what size tank he has to make sure he can accommodate them, I know he has gone back there asking about the problems he has and no one said anything about the specific fish in there, so if he didnt know and they didnt tell him...you get what he has now. I am sure once he improves and gets on here and presents more questions and more details he will get hooked on this MFK thing we all have and then he improve as we all did I am sure our first time onto the site.

Thanks for the basic tips, thats what I was looking for, something to get him started in the right direction and then move forward slowly.

I like said previously, I can't blame him, he doesnt know a lot about the fish. The LFS's didnt ask or instruct on their requirements (and no these fish didnt not come from a petco/petsmart). So that why I am here, trying to help a brother out. So I told him Wrasse and Tang gotta go, now hopefully he moves forward and starts to educate himself and ends up with a beautiful tank like we all want.

Here's a 15 gallon saltwater nano tank.

how does that help?
but i have to disagree with you jayK, it's foremost the aquarist's responsibility to research his own hobby.
