how does that help?
but i have to disagree with you jayK, it's foremost the aquarist's responsibility to research his own hobby.

I do not disagree with you per say, but at the same time he is new to the fish game just as I was about a year ago. When I first got fish I looked online a little, thought I did some research and went out and bought 5 oscars for my 55g with all the people at the LFS saying it wouldn't be a problem...needless to say it was, I have since realized that what I was doing for research was not even close to what it needed to be, I have since much improved my game and only a year later I have a vastly improved tank with a much more natural look and appropriate sized fish. So all I am saying is I dont think he knew where to begin, saw some cool fish and went for it. Now I think he is hitting that time where he wants to learn more and get things going in the right direction. I had no one to help be get started so it was a slow learning curve for me until I found MFK and spent a few months here. I am just trying to help him out, push him in the right direction and get him some sound advice, thats why I am here asking you folks because I can only really pass on my general fish knowledge that I have acquired because I dont know much about salt.

So def appreciate the help you all have given, he is looking to improve on what he has and hopefully now that he has done the typical noob thing and bought fish way to big for his tank he will do some more research, learn as much as he can and then get on the right road to success. So dont be to hard on him, thats all I am saying, he is learning like we all did at the beginning of out fish keeping experience.

Here's a 15 gallon saltwater nano tank.

Is this a true nano? I guess those are tanks you can buy all setup and ready to go? Or is that one you bought and got all the stuff for it (filter, heater, etc)?

all i can say bout the issues at hand is that doing research well in advance to purchasing ANY live stock is critical. I cant say i blame the LFS for not asking him his tank size, because mostly they never do. Most stores wanna sell the live stock. Theres a store around me who is pretty good about what he sells but that doesnt mean its full proof.

as the tank sits fallow (empty) this allows the water chemistry to even out. By that i mean any ammonia, nitrite and nitrate to lower themselfs. Im almost certain that this tank was never properly cycled which is what leads to most crashed tanks. I think your friend needs to get his butt on this website and start asking questions so we can point him in the proper direction for the benefit of his wallet and tank.

OOOOOOVERSTOCKED... maybe just the pair of fires, but that's about all i'd do in a 15.. (20 gallon footrint, minus some height)

for a 30 gallon tall.. stick to like 4-5 fish under 3-4 inches that get crazy agressive to max out that tank
firefish
dwarf angels
fairy/flasher wrasse
lined wrasse
jawfish
cardinalfish
grammas
serranids
gobies
clowns
chromis
smaller damsels
dartfish

The clownfish went to a 90 gallon. Well two did. They paired off. The other clown went to a 75. So only the firefish are in the tank now.

Is this a reasonable list for me to pass on as possible inhabitants for his 30g? 4-5 if they stay under 3-4"?

thank you!

the list that was typed up is a list of fish that would be able to live in your tank. i would say 4 fish max for atleast a yeah. What he needs to do is get his tank empty and let it settle down for a while, then add 2 fish and hold off on adding others for a few weeks. He also needs to do a different form of acclimation. IMO floating the bag is a little on the lazy side for Salt water. Drip acclimation is a good way to stabalize the fish before he gets added into the tank. This prevents shock and thats usually the trigger to disease if not death. Drip acclimation is easy, some air line tubing with knot in one end to keep it a steady drip. You can go as slow as you want with the drip per second so to say, but you dont want to be to fast, otherwise that will still be a sudden change for the fish to under go. google drip acclimation and you can get diagrams, etc....
