I had 5 large smelt in my freezer. After donning gloves and a sharp knife, I cut them open. Four turned out to be females, all stuffed with roe. I collected the roe, cut the smelt into feedable pieces, and discarded the entrails.

The feeding was a hit, a real frenzy. You can see my Gara Gara coming out for the feeding. Every fish in the tank got some eggs.

I don't know if that will still be big enough. That would make a good grow out tank though.
