I plan on making a Neolamprologus pulcher colony tank, but was wondering if I could put a pleco in there or if that would eat the eggs/fry or if the parents would kill the pleco off... is there anything that could survive in a tank with a colony safely?

I keep albino bristle noses in almost every one of my tanks and generally don't have problems with Malawian or Tangs. With Ancistrus, you don't have to worry about them eating the fry, generally only them being picked on by the cichlids.

Only issue I ever had was a rubber lip getting his eyes tagged by demasoni. Mean little effers!

Agreed. I have BSN plecos in both my tang and malawi tanks with no issues.

well i read that N Pulchers can comfortably form a colony in a tank as small as 15 gal.... this doesn't seem right to me so i was thinking 30 or 40 gallons.

This along with a few other sites are where i read this... but i see that i'd need a 50 for another species... is all this correct or is this site wrong?

Brian and Tony, why do you have BN's in those tanks, purely for cleaning or other reasons?

Nah, just for cleaning. Some folks use olive netrie snails in with their Africans to clean the glass, but I'm more the fan of the plecos... they live longer, reproduce and cover more area. Plus, they won't leave infertile eggs all over the glass like nerites do.

I've only seen them in 30Ls before and it was only them. Beautiful with lots of personality, but nasty once paired. If you only wanted one pair, I could see them splitting a 55 with something sturdy - Altolamps maybe.

Does anyone know if they'll crossbreed with leleupi? I don't think so, but not sure. That could be a cool combo in a 55.
