Neolamprologus tetracanthus tank mates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They're aggressive, but they're not THAT bad. There's far worse swimming in Lake Tanganyika :naughty:

Assuming you have a 75+g, non-breeding specimens can be kept with other "rough and ready" neolamprologines (sexfasciatus, tretocephalus, nigriventris), the smaller lepidios (nkambae, kendalli) and the like. Telmatochromis sp. "temporalis shell", though small, will be able to hold their own without a problem, providing they're given adequate places to hide.

I have about 5 1 inch to 1 1/2 inch tetracanthus with a variety of other cichlids. I have it with a red zebra, jack dempsey, livingstoni, firemouth, green terror, jewel, managanuese, and a compressicep. They all get along real fine but I also feed them about 4 times a day and they LOVE to eat

The manguense will out grow every fish in that tank it should be removed before it gets 3" or it will start picking off tankmates. The manguense grow way faster then most of those fish & will consistently test them for weakness. How big is your tank as the rest of the fish will be ok together until the (livingstoni gets 6" or so & might try to eat the compressiceps which will not be able to compete with the swiftness of the jewel when it comes to food(do you see it eat now or do you just assume it eats).
Size wise the tetracanthrus, green terror, dempsey, livingstonii, & mangeunse can live together in a big enough tank. Actually the compressiceps is probaly only ok with the firemouth in long term(possibly green terror & dempsey) as far as having a chance to eat & not be picked on (zebras, jewels, tetracanthrus & managuense are to aggressive for them(compressiceps). Managuense & livingstonii are big ( 12" minimum) & highly piscavorous(fish eaters) so should never be in tanks with fish small enough to swallow;which the adult size of zebras & compressiceps make them tasty treats for them
