I hope to keep a neon blue jack or two in a 40 gallon breeder (36x18x15tall) I was wondering if anyone has any insight into wether this could be a long term solution or would they need to be moved? the 40 is drilled w/ a big sump (almost 20gal) I also have an empty 55 but it is one of those stupid show tanks (48x13xsomething tall, can't remember offhand) so I was hoping to keep them in the 40. also do you think the neon blue jack would be okay w/ a purple spot gudgeon?

sorry for the long post I have been trying to decide how to work this out

blue jacks would probably be fine in a 40 breeder. while there are exceptions, they typically don't grow as large as regular dempseys. also, according to many who've kept them they are more fragile than normal dempseys so I wouldn't keep them with anything nippy or the slightest bit aggressive just to be safe. maybe a school of large non-nippy tetras, rasboras or rainbows would go well with them.

I won't say anything about the gudgeon because I know nothing about them. :D

:iagree: that BJDs can be kept in a tank this size. About the gudgeon, I really don't know but I have a feeling that as a wet pet or with a spiny bottom dweller lika a nice plec or other catfish. My 0.02 ;)

Best regards.

Daniel.

40 breeder would be nice for an Electric blue Dempsey.

They should be fine in a 40. In my experiences with them they are more fragile then regular JDs. Try not to put anything with it thats gonna pick on it too much. Also if you want them to grow at all you should do frequent large water changes-I did about 40% 1-2 times a week and that seemed to work.

this is my first foray into monster keeping (I have tons of planted tanks etc.) but I was wondering if this would be the fish that i should start out with, I also have access to a bunch of red texas cichlids do you guys think they might be a better choice?

red texas are a hybrid so there's no way to say for sure exactly how large they'll grow, but they most likely will grow significantly larger than a blue dempsey would. that being said I think blue dempseys would be better suited for your tank. with lots of filtration, frequent water changes, a well balanced diet and no nippy or overly aggressive fish you shouldn't have much trouble with blue dempseys. :)

:iagree:

go with the blue jacks, they are fun. i have one in my 125 and he holds his own against my green terror just fine. but man they are a sloooow growing fish. BUT, you should send some red texas my way :)

what would you guys say there specific water requirements are? My tap water is definetly on the hard side. If it is at all possible for me to avoid using any more RO it would definitly be alot simpler.
