Neon Tetra breeding log...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A few weeks ago I bought a large clump of java moss to use with the neons. I put it in the 55 gallon tank and in 4 days I had a little hair algae begin growin on the plants and then pea soup! Its been like that for awhile now at least until yesterday when I moved most of the water from the 55 gallon into 5 10 gallon tanks on the top of the shelf in the photos. When I look at the 55 even knowing it should have only 15% the suspended algae it had before I can barely tell!!

My plan is to cleanup the 55 gallon and let the neons live there for awhile to see what happens when they have a big tank to swim around and spawn in rather than the small containers. I'm going to put most of the java moss in one corner with some plants sticking out of it. I will keep watch for a month and if fry are seen I will setup my other 55 gallon tank and move them into it so that the fry get a chance to grow.

Even if they spawn and hatch in the 55 gallon I am not hopeful as to how many will survive the parents =/

Today is the first time I have seen my neons under any light other than my led flashlight. Bought a walmart incandescent hood then used a 14watt CFL (6000k maybe) and the colors just pop especially the red! I took a picture but it doesn't show the colors as well so didn't post it.

update: waiting on the moina I put into the 55 gallon to take off and clear the water before I add the neons but with only 1 sighting in days and the tank getting greener and greener it could be awhile.

Nothing more to report on the neons spawns *but* today it was time to add the pvc air lines and then the taps going to the different tanks.

The daphnia idea wasn't working fast enough the water was dark green I could barely see anything inside. I added some UV *and* 2 ounces of daphnia moina (weight in the net) 2 days ago from a culture. Huge improvement in clarity today even from this morning there is a huge improvement althought in the pics it still looks much greener than it does to my eyes. I shrink and compress most of my image uploads so details re lost but there are loads of daphnia in the tank with a swarm of them in the upper right of the pic.

This is my plan now... been adding a few drops of miracle grow household plant fertilizer every day for a few days to get the plants growing well and it has been helping. I'm going to grow enough java moss to cover the entire bottom of the tank and keep enough daphnia in the tank that the much faster moving fry can be left alone. At least that is the idea =/

Not patient enough to let moss grow => I have plastic mesh that is 3' wide and used it to make a meshed bottom for the tank.
