Neon Tetra breeding log...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have been watching the 2 neons on and off this morning and they have shown no interest in spawning. I netted out a bigger male neon and put him with the female. Maybe tomorrow there will be a spawn... Bought a $11.00 webcam from hong kong it will be here in a week or 2 hopefully (usually doesn't take long). Will be much easier on me and the fish if I can watch them more consistently.

and... still have the fry

perhaps they aren't spawning now because there is no vegetation in that tub... isn't that what you said innitiated the spawning last time?

Yes. I am experimenting with a simpler setup so when/if I get into mass spawning these fish I will be able to setup the containers to do it more quickly.

That said I just pulled the anacharis from the first tank I setup as it was dying without enough light and found a third neon tetra. They are easier to see now that the eyes are bigger and the plants are out of the tank (tank is kinda dirty otherwise this wouldn't matter as much). I am going to see if they do alright feeding on the infusoria and cyclops in the tank for the next couple weeks.

There are 3 that are maybe 3/8" long. The tank is full of food for them to eat they are doing good.

I put in a plastic plant hoping the female neon will pick a spot to wait for the male. Anyone know how low the PH can be before using lead weights is bad?

I removed the neons from the container as the female was looking a bit skinny and checked for eggs. I couldn't see any but just in case I have setup a new container with the mesh and plastic plant. I'm using the same male neon and a new female... Maybe tomorrow

Did another search of the first spawn and the count in now upto 8 => There have been 3 that are/were easier to spot out in the open area of the tank and now 5 that stay more to the edge where the silicone seal made them difficult to see until their eyes were bigger.

I think you will have better luck getting them to spawn if you use a larger tank. The rainy season triggers spawning behavior in tetras so maybe several waterchanges using cooler water will help you out too.
